Líder nacionalista irlandés. Abogado, se involucró gradualmente en la lucha por la emancipación de los católicos organizando "mítines globales de católicos irlandeses por toda la nación para demandar sus derechos legales. En 1823 cofundó la Asociación Católica, la que obtuvo el apoyo de líderes políticos y eclesiásticos irlandeses. Después de ayudar a obtener la aprobación de la ley de Emancipación de 1829, que permitió a los católicos irlandeses ser miembros del Parlamento británico, fue elegido a la Cámara de los Comunes. Apoyó al partido whig a cambio de medidas reformistas para Irlanda, pero se desencantó con la inacción del gobierno. En 1839 formó la Asociación por la derogación de la Unión Act anglo-irlandesa. Una serie de masivos mítines ilegales en Irlanda provocaron su arresto por sedición en 1843. Después de su liberación en 1844, enfrentó la disidencia del movimiento radical Joven Irlanda de William Smith O'Brien.
